Tips To Overcome Negative Body Image

A healthy relationship with our bodies comes from accepting and loving all of our imperfections. Here are some things we can all do to get on and stay on the path and overcome negative body image:

 • Focus on your accomplishments, good qualities and important aspects of your self-concept. Repeating gratitude and loving kindness affirmations and finally, engaging in activities that result in a feeling of pleasure and mastery can all help to shore up self-esteem

• Wear comfortable clothes that you like, that express your personal style and that feel good to your body.

• Think about all the things you could accomplish with the time and energy you currently spend worrying about your body and appearance. Try one!

• With regard to social media, unfollowing social media accounts that result in excessive comparison or feelings of distress.

 • Recognizing and acknowledging your feelings and accompanying body sensations will help you become more comfortable in your body and lessens the tendency to suppress feelings and revert to unhealthy, negative inner diatribes to escape uncomfortable feelings.

 • Take small steps towards self-love and appreciation. Begin by practicing awareness of negative thoughts you may have about yourself throughout the day. Challenge those thoughts with something you appreciate about yourself, even if you do not yet believe it.

• Find a method of exercise that you enjoy and do it regularly. Don’t exercise to lose weight or to fight your body. Do it to make your body healthy and strong and because it makes you feel good. Exercise for the Three F’s: Fun, Fitness, and Friendship.

• Eat when you are hungry. Rest when you are tired. Surround yourself with people that remind you of your inner strength and beauty.
