How Does Weight Affect Body Image?

body image

A normally healthy weight range for an individual can be perceived as overweight by someone with a distorted body image.

However, poor body image may result in dieting or restrictive eating patterns in order to lose weight, which can develop into an eating disorder.

People who are unhappy with their bodies and don't seek healthy nutrition information may develop eating disorders. "Eating disorders" are unhealthy relationships with food that may include fasting, constant dieting, or binging and purging.

Women with a healthy weight can also have a negative body image, although obesity can make a woman's negative body image more severe.

Women who are underweight without another health condition may also have a negative body image if others comment negatively on their weight or express other negative attitudes.

Weight is not the only part of a person's body that determines body image. Self-esteem, past history, daily habits such as grooming, and the particular shape of your body all contribute to body image. Weight is an important part of body image, but it is not the only part.

We asked clients to answer the following questions to help us with this series about body image:

1) What has influenced you the most regarding your body image? Please answer with both the positive things and negative things.
2) What has doing a Beauty/Boudoir session done for your confidence, body image and your feelings about your body and self confidence?

Here are the thoughts of two recent clients, Arianna & Lara:

Lara's Testimonial

1. "Media and fashion have definitely influenced my body image over the years. Growing up and being a teenager in the time of low rise jeans and tiny models, my naturally curvy body just did not fit in literally. I could never wear the fashions that were in style in high school and I wore baggy sweatpants to hide my body a great deal.

If you were to see pictures of me then, I would appear unrecognizable. Often in even boys' jeans to hide my butt and thighs and appear less curvy. I wanted a thigh gap more than the straight A's I had and often thought there was something wrong with me because of it."

2. "When I saw my boudoir pictures, I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't immediately see the perceived flaws of my body, but rather I was impressed with how I appeared in the pictures. Having that third-person view of myself gave me a chance to see myself in a different way.

My husband often tells me how attractive he finds me and my shape. By viewing myself in the pictures, I believe it gave me a view of myself through his eyes which was refreshing".

Arianna's Testimonial

1) "Negatively I’ve been impacted by the media and Hollywood. The way celebs lie about plastic surgery, expensive skincare, hair extensions etc. made me feel super self conscious of myself growing up. Now with social media it actually helps with the accounts who show edited vs unedited photos.

Or posing vs natural. Getting into therapy and learning to love myself has helped. Also seeing the way I look advertised and in movies and stuff helped too. When only one kind of beauty was the norm it was hard for niche girls like me to feel wanted or good enough, but representation is good!"

2) "Doing a boudoir session has helped me to see myself in the eyes of others. I only see myself in the mirror and you can get that body dysmorphia thing when you obsess over your flaws. When you get your photos back and can see yourself through that lens, you realize “wow I’m not that bad. Actually I’m hot!!”
